What’s going on around the Terres de l’Ebre – in English

This weekend: Firabril in El Perelló

5 years ago News

This weekend, around 3,000 visitors are expected to arrive in El Perelló to enjoy Firabril, the town’s annual celebration of honey and oil.

Visitors can sample as many different honeys and oils as they can stomach along with an enormous range of other foods including bunyols amb mel i oli (little fried doughnuts), coc amb mel (honey cake with olive oil and almonds), olimelada (a surprisingly delicious mixture of honey, olive oil, herbs and almonds) and botifarres (sausages).

New products will be launched including a child-friendly honey and chocolate spread from L’Avi Lluis, and a special pastisset ‘del mandongo’ (blood sausage with rice) from the Associació de Comerciants d’El Perelló.

The 200-plus exhibitors will also be showing off handicrafts, jewellery, artisan food and drink, tractors and tools, and much more. And if all that isn’t enough, visitors can enter the draws to win their own weight in honey or a year’s supply of extra virgin olive oil.

El Perelló is known as ‘lo poble de la mel’ – it produces 60 per cent of Catalunya’s honey. The town’s several big honey producers will compete with others from outside the area in what is boasted to be the oldest honey competition in the country.

There is also a fairground, farm animals, horse dressage displays and workshops. Some of the local bars and restaurants are offering special menus.

The fair is open from 10am to 2pm, then 4pm to 9pm on Saturday 16 and Sunday 17 April.

The programme is available from El Perelló’s tourist office or you can download it here.
