Ebre Sports: Impressive win for El Perelló’s young handball team
Our sports columnist Richard Pope rounds up last weekend’s local sporting competitions.
Handball
Neus Casanova, entrenador of El Perelló’s Infantil (under-14) handball team, has the girls playing in the same disciplined style as the senior team that she plays in. Any breakdown in play sees the entire team fall back and line up in front of the goalkeeper’s semi-circle. All of the opposition’s attacking moves are then blocked, often by physically holding the players and conceding a free throw. When they do regain control of the ball they move quickly from defence to attack with slick passing, and more often than not finish with a shot at goal.
Their opponents from Polinya, a small town outside Sabadell in Barcelona province, had no answers to their powerful game. From the outset El Perelló dominated play and had soon scored seven goals without reply. The pattern never changed and El Perelló eventually won by 27-2.
Junior football
El Perelló’s Alevin (under-12) football team welcomed Gandesa to La Vinyeta stadium on Saturday. They knew from the outset that the game would be a difficult one as Gandesa had beaten La Senia 11-2 the previous weekend. In this and younger age groups teams consist of seven players and play across half of the full football pitch. I was pleasantly surprised at the standard of football, with all of the players exhibiting good ball skills.
El Perelló went ahead after 18 minutes through Oriol Curto but by half time found themselves trailing by two goals to one. The second half was evenly balanced with Oriol scoring again but in the final five minutes Gandesa scored two more goals to put the game beyond Perelló’s reach, winning 2-5.
L’Ametlla won 3-1 in La Senia which probably makes them favourites to win the first derby games against Perelló next weekend
The El Perelló Infantil football team began their campaign with an excellent 4-2 win at Ebre Escola. L’Ametlla, also in this league, had an even better result beating Mora d’Ebre 6-0.
Senior football
The senior football teams had a good weekend. L’Ampolla now head the table after demolishing Godall 7 goals to 1. L’Ametlla managed a 1-1 draw against a good Aldeana team and move out of the bottom four.
El Perelló got their second win of the season with a 2-1 victory in Sant Jaume d’Enveja. After falling behind they equalised before half time through Arnau Pedreny and in the second half Joan Esteban grabbed the winner.
Since losing Magi Andreu through a serious injury El Perelló have shown a lack of decisiveness in front of goal and in this game a new forward Alberto Cuenca, signed from Torredembarra, started. He didn’t score but here’s hoping he is the solution.
