Firabril 2017: El Perelló celebrates honey and oil
Firabril, El Perelló’s famous annual celebration of its two main products, honey and oil, takes place this weekend.
El Perelló is known as ‘lo poble de la mel’ – it produces 60 per cent of Catalunya’s honey. The town’s several big honey producers will compete with others from outside the area in what is boasted to be the oldest honey competition in the country.
Come along to try local products – not only honey and oil, but also bunyols amb mel i oli (little fried doughnuts), coc amb mel (honey cake with olive oil and almonds), botifarres (sausages) and much more.
Dozens of exhibitors will be selling handicrafts, jewellery, artisan food and drink, tractors and tools.
You can enter the draws to win your own weight in honey or a year’s supply of extra virgin olive oil.
There is also a fairground, farm animals, horse displays and workshops. Some of the local bars and restaurants are offering special menus.
The weekend begins with a concert at 10.30pm on Friday 7 April at the Sports Centre. On Saturday 8 April and Sunday 9 April the fair is open from 10am to 2pm, then 4pm until 9pm.
The programme is available from El Perelló’s tourist office or you can download it here.
