Great wins for the Perelló football and handball teams
Our sports correspondent, Richard Pope, accidentally missed last weekend’s local derby football match between El Perelló and L’Ametlla. Luckily, he caught up online. Here’s what happened.
On Saturday evenings, if I get on my laptop, I have a quick look through the football and rugby results to see how my favourite teams have got on. Imagine my shock, horror and then delight when I went into the fcf.cat website and saw L’Ametlla 1-3 Perelló. I had spent the whole week thinking that the game was on Sunday, I had even mentioned it in my article last week. Obviously, my mindfulness head wasn’t in gear as I know that L’Ametlla play all their home games on a Saturday. I really hope that no-one turned up there on Sunday from my recommendation.
Apologies, but let me tell you what I gleaned from the data on the website. L’Ametlla took an early lead through Alejandro Piñeiro only to be pegged back just one minute before half-time through a goal by Alex Pedrosa. The Perelló supporters must have been feeling happier at half time.Five minutes after the restart, Eric Barbera put Perelló ahead scoring his second goal in two games and then Joan (Xixo) Esteban scored their third ten minutes from the end. Alex Pedrosa is Perelló’s top goal scorer this season with eight goals, two of them from penalties.
Luckily, a video showing the highlights of the game was on the Centre d’Esports Facebook page so I was able to catch up on what happened. Eric Barbera’s goal is well worth watching – see it below.
Handball update
Elsewhere, the senior handball team gained their 12th consecutive league victory, this time winning 32-23 in Barcelona Sants. This keeps them four points ahead of second-placed Tortosa who won at Asco.
The infantil handball team suffered a narrow defeat in Franqueses by 20 points to 17 and now slip down to fourth position, being leapfrogged by the team that beat them.
The younger footballers
Finally, the young benjami and prebenjami football teams have finished the first phase of their leagues. The most successful of the Perelló teams are the benjami negres who stand third in their league behind sides from Tortosa and Roquetes.
Good luck to all the teams when they start the second phase soon!
