Advice and guidance to stay safe on the beach

stay safe on the beach

Spain’s beaches are beautiful and the Mediterranean along the Catalan coastline is warm and welcoming. But the sea can be dangerous.

Across Spain so far this year there have been 339 drownings, a 15% rise on the same period last year. There have been more than 400 rescues from aquatic areas.

So here is some guidance to help you keep yourself and your family safe on the beach.

Know the beach flags

There are usually three flags used on Catalan beaches:

Green: Safe. The sea is calm and the water is good quality.

Yellow: Caution. There are potentially high waves, possibly dirty or sandy water or maybe jellyfish.

Red: Bathing forbidden. The sea is rough or polluted.

Follow the guidelines to stay safe on the beach
