September heatwave breaks records in Catalunya
The early September heatwave broke records in Terres de l’Ebre as a mass of warm air moved up through Spain from northern Africa.
According to data from the Servei Meteorològic de Catalunya (SMC), on Sunday 4 September Vinebre in Ribera d’Ebre reached 41.6C, the highest temperature recorded this year in Catalunya.
On Monday 5 September, the Terres de l’Ebre area (which includes Baix Ebre) was particularly hot with temperatures reaching between 38 and 40C and with relative humidity of less than 10 per cent in some places. The SMC also noted that the lack of a sea breeze caused temperatures to escalate. The Observatori de l’Ebre in Roquetes (Baix Ebre) recorded a maximum temperature of 41.5 C – a record high for September.
Record-breaking temperatures
During the heatwave, eight of the SMC’s 135 weather stations (with ten years of data) broke temperature records, including L’Ametlla, which peaked at 39.8 degrees on 5 September. (El Perelló reached 38.3C that day.)
Temperatures are now reducing, with warnings for heavy rain in place for Tuesday night.
